Zelnorm: A Medicine That Treats The Chronic Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Zelnorm was marketed as Tegaserod before its use was banned. Zelnorm is still used but in limited cases. The use of Zelnorm was mostly to treat irritable bowel syndrome in women. This was in cases where diarrhea was not a symptom of the condition. Zelnorm was also use to treat severe constipation, a condition known as idiopathic constipation, in those under the age of fifty five years. This condition is mainly characterized by constipation that lasted for more than half a year. It is cautioned though that you should not use Zelnorm as a treatment to irritable bowel syndrome that has diarrhea as the only symptom.
How Zelnorm Works: The body has what is known as the enteric nervous system that is mainly responsible for controlling the reflexes of the muscles lining the digestive system tract. This tract runs from your mouth to your anus. Zelnorm works by affecting the action of a receptor known as 5-HT4 receptors. This will increase the action of a chemical in the body known as serotonin. Serotonin then increases the action of the enteric nervous system. All this will work to move stool through your stomach and intestines.
Zelnorm Dosage: Use Zelnorm as will be recommended by your doctor. Do not adjust the dosage or the duration for which you should take it. Your use of Zelnorm will be dependent on the condition that you are being treated for, your age and on other drugs that you are taking to treat any other condition that you may have. In the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome that is accompanied by constipation the usual recommended dosage of Zelnorm is six milligrams a day for a period of four to six weeks. You may need to keep taking the drug for another four to six weeks if your doctor recommends it. Zelnorm is usually taken two times a day. Zelnorm is taken before meals with a full glass of water. You should consult with your doctor if there is no improvement in your symptoms after two weeks of using Zelnorm.
Precautions Before Taking Zelnorm: You should inform your doctor if you suffer from any of the following conditions before he prescribes Zelnorm. These are gallbladder problems such as gallstones, if you have ever suffered from any problem such as liver problems or kidney problems, if you suffer from diarrhea, if you have any intestinal or stomach ailments and/or if you are allergic to the medication or any of the ingredients in the medication. Your doctor may need to readjust your dosage of Zelnorm if you get pregnant or if you are breastfeeding. You should not take Zelnorm if you are suffering from any of the following conditions; if you have a history of stroke or a heart attack, if you have a condition known as angina, if you have triglycerides (which is a type of cholesterol), if you smoke, if you have had suicidal thoughts or if you have had diabetes.
Side Effects Of Zelnorm: You may have allergic reactions to the ingredients in Zelnorm. These may present itself as hives; rashes, itching or you may develop swelling that is unexplainable. You may get to experience increased severity of your symptoms when you start to use Zelnorm. This will require your doctor`s attention. These may include severe stomach pains or you may develop cramps, you may also start to diarrhea, you may have blood in stool which is usually an indication of rectal bleeding, you may start to have vision problems such as it becoming blurry and/or you may faint. Some other not so common side effects of taking Zelnorm that you may experience include an increase in your appetite, you may become depressed, you may start to have insomnia, you may start to experience vertigo and some cases you may start to lose hair.
